Protection of Digital Research Data

The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance works closely with the Information Security Office and the Office of Institutional Compliance and Risk Services to ensure that Researchers, Faculty and Staff have access to comprehensive policies and procedures to properly protect their Digital Research Data.

Protecting Digital Research Data is critical to maintaining a successful Research program. Taking the time to secure your digital data is part of being a responsible researcher. UT System has recently issued a new policy and guidance (UTS167) for all researchers to ensure that digital research data is appropriately classified and protected. In addition, a memorandum sent by President Romo in October 2006 announced that the Protection of Digital Research Data is a high priority for UTSA.

Following UTSA's new guidelines for classifying and protecting digital research data will help ensure the security of the systems involved and will help safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of research data.

As a UTSA researcher, faculty or staff member, you are responsible for:
  • Classifying: Your digital research data should be classified appropriately.
  • Data Protection: Based on the classification of data, protecting the systems where the data is stored and how you transmit that data. This includes controlling how it is accessed and by whom.
  • Training - Click here to view the Protection of Digital Data training module.
  • Backups - Following Backup and Recovery Standards.

A memorandum released in March 2007 contains all the necessary links for classifying and securing your research data.

The UTSA Office of Information Technology Staff is available to support you in protecting your digital research data.
